Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Discover the top 5 anti-inflammatory foods that can help eliminate chronic diseases and improve your health, recommended by Dr. Chris Colgin, DC.

Aloha everyone! Inflammation is the root cause of many health problems. Our members and patients have been reaching out to me, asking about my top five foods that can eliminate inflammation. So, I did extensive research and came up with five foods that, if eaten regularly, can help you get rid of inflammation completely. Let’s get started!

Understanding Inflammation

Inflammation is a root cause responsible for many chronic diseases, whether it is autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, cancer, diabetes, or arthritis. Food plays an important role, and I’m going to share with you the top five foods that research supports can get rid of inflammation.

1. Chia and Flax Seeds

Chia and flax seeds have been called superfoods because they are low in calories, high in protein, and rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, they are also high in fiber and contain a significant amount of antioxidant compounds. These antioxidant compounds help your body get rid of inflammation immediately. The interesting part is that chia and flax seeds have both soluble and insoluble fibers, which are very important for supporting your gut health. Recent research has made it clear that supporting your gut health can help get rid of inflammation immediately. Chia seeds provide you with good protein to keep your immune system healthy, along with antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, which help eliminate inflammation immediately. It is very important to eat chia seeds and flax seeds in the right way.

2. Mushrooms

Yes, mushrooms are superfoods. They do not get the limelight they should be getting. There are different kinds of mushrooms in the market, like button mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, and portobello mushrooms. All these mushrooms are packed with nutrients. They have several vitamins and minerals that support your immune system. They are very high in protein content and fiber, which supports your gut health. Mushrooms are also very high in a compound called selenium. Selenium is very important for keeping your immune functions healthy, especially for thyroid and Hashimoto's patients, and it also helps in reducing inflammation. Mushrooms are the only food that contains vitamin D. The majority of vitamin D comes from sun exposure. Mushrooms can utilize sun exposure and create vitamin D. Vitamin D is very important for boosting your immune system, so mushrooms help keep your immune system in good shape, thereby reducing inflammation in your body.

3. Buckwheat

The next food on this list is going to shock you. Yes, this food is called buckwheat. Buckwheat has recently been called a superfood. What exactly is buckwheat? Buckwheat is a pseudocereal, which means that people eat it like cereal, but it is not a grain. Buckwheat is a gluten-free grain. Though it has "wheat" in its name, it does not contain wheat. Now we know that gluten is a major problem for people with inflammation, and they should be avoiding gluten. Many people ask me what they should be eating instead of gluten. The alternative is buckwheat. Buckwheat is high in fiber, high in protein content, and very low in calories, making it very safe for people with diabetes as well as those who are struggling to lose weight. Buckwheat is very high in something called d-chiro-inositol. Inositol is a very important compound that helps your body reduce inflammation and rebalance your hormones. Additionally, buckwheat is high in polyphenols called quercetin and rutin. These polyphenols are powerful antioxidants that immediately get rid of inflammation in your body. So, include buckwheat regularly to help rid your body of inflammation.

4. Fatty Fish

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

The next food on this list is fatty fish, especially tuna, salmon, and sardines. These fatty fish are very important to include if you want to get rid of inflammation. They are very high in omega-3 fatty acids, which help your body eliminate inflammation immediately. These fatty fish are also a complete source of quality protein. They contain all the amino acids needed by your immune system to function properly and help get rid of inflammation. These fatty fish are also high in several mineral compounds, like zinc, which are important for your immune system. The biggest issue with eating fish these days is that they are often high in mercury. For that reason, you must pick your fish carefully. You need to choose fish from organic places or wild-caught fish, as these are lower in mercury.

5. Green Leafy Vegetables

The last food on this list is green leafy vegetables, especially spinach, mustard greens, kale, and dandelion roots. These greens are power packed with nutrients. They are high in several vitamins, like vitamin C and vitamin K. They are also high in several polyphenols, like quercetin, which is a powerful antioxidant that removes inflammation from your body. Additionally, they contain a compound called sulforaphane, which supports your liver health. The liver is very important in reducing and preventing inflammation in your body. It is very important to eat these greens properly. A lot of people eat raw greens, but steaming your greens is the best way to utilize them. Steaming makes them easier to digest and improves the bioavailability of the vitamins and minerals in those greens.

Conclusion

Now you know the top five foods that, if you eat on a regular basis, will help you get rid of inflammation completely from your body.
